Adobe Suite For Mac Leopard

Adobe recently released a FAQ regarding its Creative Suite and the suite's compatibility with the upcoming Snow Leopard update. Like the recent announcement that future versions of the Creative Suite would only support Intel-based Macs, what has been announced has drawn some controversy. Adobe is only supporting CS4 on Snow Leopard.

Does that mean CS3 or CS2, which many folks are still using, won't work with Snow Leopard? That remains to be seen (and we'll do our best to check on that for you come this weekend—some of us in Orbiting HQ use one or the other). What Adobe is really saying, though, is that the company worked with Apple to test and make sure that CS4 works, and it does. What Adobe isn't going to do is take away resources currently going toward supporting CS4 and working on CS5 in order to fix issues for two-and-a-half-year-old software. Adobe already doesn't provide any new Camera Raw updates to CS3, for instance, and hasn't for some time.

Adobe and Apple have worked together closely to test that Adobe Creative Suite 4 products and components run reliably and efficiently on Intel‐based systems running Mac OS X Snow Leopard (v10.6) with optimal performance and user experience. Better still, if you have Adobe 2 installed in your computer, you can use a discounted price to upgrade to Adobe Creative Suite 6. CS2 works in Rosetta on Leopard, so there's a pretty good chance that it will continue to work in Rosetta on Snow Leopard. CS3 has been rock solid for us in Orbiting HQ under Leopard, so there's a pretty good chance it will also continue to work just fine on Snow Leopard. That said, Adobe's policy might disappoint some users hoping to get the benefits of Snow Leopard but weren't ready to upgrade their Adobe software. If incompatibility is a concern, though, it might be worth holding off for a while and see if any major show-stoppers turn up.

UPDATE: Adobe's John Nack has posted a note saying that the limited testing that has been done suggests that Photoshop CS3 should run just fine on Snow Leopard. This jibes with some early reports we've seen 'round the 'Net. It confirms our own suspicions, though not everyone in Orbiting HQ has gotten Snow Leopard installed, so we haven't been able to verify this for ourselves.

Also, according to Adobe's Richard Galvan, limited testing of Flash CS3 hasn't turned up any issues either. That doesn't guarantee no issues exist, but it leaves us confident that there shouldn't be any major issues with the rest of the suite's main applications.
